In most bulk materials, particles retain the natural grain shape of the raw material – typically an irregular mix of cubic and angular grains with no homogeneity.
A random grain shape is unsuitable for nearly all customer applications. Whether predominantly cubic or splintery, the grain shape is a key quality feature – and one we precisely control in our production via specialized milling techniques.
Corundum typically fractures largely in splinters. An efficient iron-free rounding process is used to refine the grain shape after initial processing. Uniform grinding guarantees a high yield without a large amount of dust. The special properties of rounded grains are a good scattering and flow behavior, a better integration in the resin matrix, as well as the high level of transparency.
